Golf Teams Finish 6th & 8th in RMAC Spring Championships

Justin Onken
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney golf teams placed sixth (women) and eighth at the 2010 RMAC Springs Championships in Arizona.

The women played a 36-hole, 10-team tournament at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear while the men were down the road in Florence at Poston Butte G.C. They played a 54-hole tournament with 10 teams as well.

On the women's side, Hastings sophomore Sara Wissing tied for third with a 10 over par 154 (75-79). Her two rounds featured 22 pars, tied for third most in the tournament.

UNK, as a team, had rounds of 341 and 348 to come in ahead of CSU-Pueblo, Adams State, Chadron State and Colorado Christian. RMAC-affiliate member Montana State-Billings won (638) with Western New Mexico runner up (644).

When adding up the entire fall and spring season, Mesa State had the best accumulative score (30 points). The Lopers were fifth (16) in this area.

On the men's side, UNK tied Regis for eight, each shooting a 935. The Lopers had rounds of 310, 316 and 309.  Western New Mexico (673) rallied past Colo.-Colo. Springs (677) to win the tournament.

Omaha senior Justin Onken paced Kearney, tying for 27th with a 232 (72-82-78). Gordon Webb of WNMU and Chris Shoop of Colo. Spring tied for first, each with a one under par 212.

When adding this tournament with the fall championships, UNK ranked 9th out of 10 teams (1,248 strokes). UCCS, at 1,173 strokes, thus wins the overall RMAC title.

Team and individual bids to NCAA Super Regionals will be handed out next week. Wissing is likely to claim one of the individual bids; she represented UNK last year in South Dakota. This year's, the women's regional is in Minnesota.

The Loper men are hoping to make it as a team after just missing last year's event. UNK was ranked eighth in the last Central Region rankings and is squarely on the bubble for one one of the eight at-large bids.

Minnesota State and UCCS will receive the automatic bids to the regionals, held this year in California.
