Track Competes in Lincoln

Kearney, Neb. - Throwers Dane Tobey and Sam Murphy led the Nebraska-Kearney track & field team this weekend at the Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln.

began Friday night with the men's and women's hammer throw. Most of the meet, featuring Division I and Division II schools from around the area, took place Saturday.

Tobey (Waco) was the only Loper to win an event, placing first in the shot put with a season-best toss of 58.9.25. An automatic qualifying throw for the NCAA's, Tobey placed first in a field of 20, edging out  Nebraska's Luke Pinkelman (57-10.25).

Tobey wasn't done, having a season-best effort (180-8) in the discus, which was good for a second place finish in a field of 18. The throw also was an NCAA automatic effort.

Murphy (Franklin) also had two season best throws on Saturday, both NCAA provisional efforts. She came in fifth out of 21 in the shot (45-3.75) and was fourth out of 20 in the discus (145-10).

On Friday, Murphy competed in the seeded hammer throw, finishing fifth out of eight (159-1).

Among other women, Sidney junior Jessie Golden was third out of 22 in the 100 hurdles (14.731), Grand Island freshman Ariel Krolikowski was fifth in the high jump (5-3) and 10th in the long jump with the 4 x 400 relay team running a 3:59.31 to place fifth out of 12 schools.

UNK beat, among others, three squads from Division I Missouri-Kansas City, Augustana and NW Missouri State.  Finally, Lincoln freshman Karley Piper was 5th out of 28 at 800 meters (2:17.89).

On the men's side, Kearney native Marty Molina was fourth in the triple jump (47-9.25) with junior Scott Wenzl eighth (46-2.75) and seniors Rich Mourer (171-6) and Nick Theis (170-2) went 6-7 in the seeded hammer throw.

UNK has several away events next weekend in Lawrence, Kans., Pueblo, Colo. and Crete.
