Box Score Kearney, Neb. - The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team scored two second half goals to break a one all tie and beat Nebraska-Kearney,
3-1, Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas, N.M.
With the victory, the Cowgirls get back to the .500 mark (6-6, 4-4 RMAC) while UNK falls to 3-8-1 (1-6-1 RMAC).
Like in Friday night's 2-1 loss at Colorado-Colorado Springs, the Lopers drew first blood. Sophomore
Raliegh Mercer (Centennial, Colo.) took a pass from sophomore Sara Talcott (Denver, Colo.) and scored her seventh goal of the season at the 34:20 minute mark.
Mercer now has seven of UNK's 13 goals on the year. Current sophomore
Becka Talcott earned second-team All-RMAC honors for scoring seven goals, a school-record, in 2010.
Highlands managed to tie things up six minutes before halftime when 2010 RMAC Player of the Year Julissa Rodriguez scored an unassisted goal. This was her 10th goal of the year, tops in the league.
The Cowgirls then turned to its second leading scorer, Janelle McGee, to move ahead. She recorded her sixth and seventh goals, respectively, in the 66th and 79th minutes. Rodriguez assisted on the first one, pushing her season point total to an impressive 24.
On the day, UNK was out shot 21-6 and HU also had one more corner, 4-3. In goal, junior keeper
Marissa Niday (Frmeont) stopped eight shots.
This weekend, the Lopers stay on the road and play at Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian.
