Volleyball Sweeps CCU, UNO Up Next

Liz McGowan
Kearney, Neb. - The 6th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball shook off a slow start and roared past the Colorado Christian Cougars (-19, -10, -18) Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (23-1, 13-1 RMAC) has won 10 matches in a row and 18 straight sets. CCU, which fell 3-2 to the Lopers on Oct. 7th, drops to 14-11 (9-5 RMAC).

Like the match in Lakewood, CCU came out strong, grabbing leads of 4-1, 9-4 and 12-7 in the first set. UNK called an early timeout and finally started to make a move after three straight kills, two coming from junior outside Ariel Krolikowski (Grand Island).

A kill from sophomore middle Haley Lake (Lincon SE) cut the Christian lead to one, 15-14, and then Lake served up six straight points. During this stretch, CCU called a timeout as UNK had four kills and a block.

The Lopers not only rolled for the rest of the first set but the match as well. There was just one lead change over the final two sets as UNK hit over .300 and CCU hit .083 during this time.

Krolikowski lead Kearney on the night, having a match-high 15 kills, six digs and three blocks while hitting .306. Lake (10 kills, four blocks, two digs) was a force at the net as was Omaha sophomore Ellie Pesavento (seven kills, five blocks, .400 attack pct.).

Also, sophomore outside Ashley Leitner (Lincoln SW) had eight kills and hit .467 with freshman libero Liz McGowan (Grand Island CC) having 13 digs.

RMAC Freshman of the Year candidate Ali Weber, a middle hitter, lead Christian with 13 kills and a .355 attack pct. The rest of CCU combined for just 16 kills.

UNK hosts UNO Tuesday night.
