Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team can go a long way in making the 2011 RMAC Tournament by picking up wins this weekend in Colorado and New Mexico.
The Lopers (3-6-1, 1-4-1 RMAC) face Colorado-Colorado Springs Friday at 8:30 p.m. Central and then play the Cowgirls Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Central.
In the RMAC standings, the Mountain Lions are in sixth place with a 2-3 record (6-3 overall) with HU at 2-4 (3-6 overall).UNK is currently tied for eighth; six schools make the RMAC postseason event.
Fans can follow this weekend's action by going to the Central Region
live stats page. Also, the Highlands game is available, for a price, on
America One.
Looking for its third-ever road win, UNK will face a Springs team that is coming off wins over Nebraska-Omaha, 3-2, and Colorado Christian, 4-3.
Allowing at least two goals in four straight games, UCCS features a balanced offense, led by senior forward Julia Saenz (eight points) and Iceland native Agnes Arnadottir (six points).
Last year, UNK scored a school-record six goals in beating the Lions, 6-2, at Cope Stadium. It was a rough night for Springs as they scored two "own" goals. UCCS got its revenge, however, winning 4-2 at home later in the year.
In 2009, the Lopers fell 5-0 in Colorado Springs.
Highlands blasted D2 newcomer Texas-Permian Basin, 9-1, earlier this week to stop a four game skid. The Cowgirls feature 2010 RMAC Player of the Year Julissa Rodriguez (20 points; nine goals and two assists), a 5-5 senior forward, with 5-10 freshman Janelle McGee (five goals) also a threat.
Three players have been in goal with Scottie Prince (2-0, 0.00 GAA) being the most successful.
Last season, UNK and HU tied 1-1 in Kearney. A year earlier, the Lopers ended their first season with an 8-0 loss in Las Vegas.
Kearney hosts league powers Metro State and Regis next weekend.
