Blue/Gold Scrimmage Kicks Off 2019-20

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team kicked off the 2019-20 season with the Gold getting past the Blue, 27-13, in the annual Blue/Gold scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

To start the 14-match dual, two-time All-American and 2019 national runner up Josh Portillo (Clarion, Ia.) managed a 9-5 win at 125 pounds over Blair freshman Jackson Nielsen. He used a takedown and a 4-point near fall in the opening period to take command.

Kansas junior Wesley Dawkins, the defending 133 pound national runner up, competed at 141 pounds and recorded a 7-1 win over Kearney freshman Nick James. Dawkins tallied a first period takedown and then four points in the third period to pick up the victory.

Next, Iowa junior Matt Malcom bested Kansas sophomore Terrell Garraway by a 9-5 score at 174 pounds. Winning a national title last winter at 157 pounds Malcom will be at 165 pounds this season. He got by Garraway thanks to three takedowns and riding time.

Finally, in the highlight match of the day Kearney redshirt freshman heavyweight Lee Herrington beat Geneva senior Jarrod Hinrichs by a 5-1 score. Both won other matches in the dual with Herrington using a takedown and a 2-point near fall in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit. Hinrichs was the 2019 national runner up at 285 pounds with Herrington winning a gold medal (130 kg) for the U.S. at the Junior Pan American Championships in Guatemala this summer.

UNK starts the regular season next Saturday at the Wyoming Cowboy Open before heading to Lincoln to face the Huskers and Hastings Broncos in duals on Thursday, November 7.
