UNK Dominates in Lindsborg; Home Open Tourney Next Saturday

Kearney, Neb. – The fourth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team dominated the 8th Annual Swede Open Saturday in Lindsborg, Kan., to the tune of 75 wins, including 38 by fall, and 14 medalists.

The non-team scoring meet featured Division II, NAIA and junior college from the area.

Tying for first at 125 pounds was Iowa junior Josh Portillo and Blair true freshman Jackson Nielsen with Lincoln junior Wesley Dawkins and Grand Island junior Jonathan Killingsworth sharing the 141 pound crown. This foursome was a combined 14-0 with six tech falls, two falls and three majors.

Winning their class outright was Iowa junior Matt Malcom (165 lbs.) and Gretna redshirt freshman Tyler Cunningham (157 lbs.). The top-ranked Malcom had five bonus point victories to outscore his competition by a 70-10 margin along with a fall in 2:10. Cunningham had three bonus point wins before getting past Anthony Scantil of Fort Hays State, 5-1, in the finals.

Next, Illinois sophomore Andrew Demos was runner up at 197 lbs. with seven Lopers coming in third place. That large group included Alliance senior Walker Johnson (157 lbs.), South Carolina junior Talon Seitz (174 lbs.), Texas junior Jace LaCaille (197 lbs.), Kearney redshirt freshmen Lee Herrington (285 lbs.) and Teontae Wilson (149 lbs.), Kearney true freshman Nick James (141 lbs.) and Seward true freshman Joseph Reimers (184 lbs.).

Among the highlights in this large group was Demos having four falls to place second with Reimers at four falls and a tech fall. Next Seitz had five falls in a total of 4:34 with Wilson's four pins coming in a combined 4:10. Finally Johnson had three tech falls by a combined score of 51-3

UNK hosts the annual Younes Hospitality Open next Saturday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.
