Volleyball Sweeps Chadron, Wins Record 40th Straight RMAC Match

Kearney, Neb. – Outside hitters Kelsey Werner and Ashley Leitner combined for 21 kills and 12 digs, and senior setter Cola Svec chipped in with a career-high seven kills, to help the 9th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team to a sweep of Chadron State (-14, -17, -19) Tuesday night in Chadron.

The Lopers (23-3, 14-0 RMAC) push its win streak to 13 straight and also win a 40th straight RMAC regular season match, breaking its own record of 39. UNK won its last match of the 2003 season and then went unbeaten in league play in 2004 and 2005.

Kearney's last RMAC regular season loss was back on October 17th, 2008 at Western State (3-2).

In a match that lasted just over an hour, UNK out hit the Eagles .311 to .129. The Lopers pretty much controlled each set with Werner having 11 kills and four digs and Leitner, a freshman from Lincoln Southwest, recording 10 kills, eight digs and a block off the bench.

Running another efficient offense that rung up 52 kills, Svec (Elkhorn) had 40 assists and 18 digs. She also was on the attack, recording seven kills and no errors in 11 swings, good for a .636 hitting percentage.  On the season, Svec now has 61 kills (0.72 per set) and is hitting a solid .311.

In the middle, senior Jeri Walkowiak (Grand Island) and freshman Ellie Pesavento (Omaha Marian) combined for 19 kills, four digs and two blocks and hit .428. Finally, senior libero Katlyn Heiserman (Manchester, Iowa) dug up a match-high 23 balls.

Chadron was led by Mollie Jones who had eight kills and 10 digs while also hitting a team-high .269.

The Lopers host 19th-ranked Metro State Friday night.
