AWARII DUNES

Awarri Dunes Golf Course

Address: 592 S Road Axtell, NE 68924
Opened: 2011

Situated to the south of Kearney in the neighboring town of Axtell lies Golf Digest’s 2011 new course of the year, Awarii Dunes Golf Course. Designed by renowned golf course architect Jim Engh, the course is inspired by the great links courses of Ireland. Since opening in 2011, Awarii Dunes has served as the home course of the University of Nebraska at Kearney men’s and women’s golf team.

The 18-hole course measuring 6,900 yards winds throughout the sand dunes and rolling hills that were created by nature, not man. Along with the dunes the course includes fescue roughs, blowout bunkers, blind shots and roller-coaster putting surfaces.

Since Awarii Dunes became UNK’s home course, the Lopers have seen great success, reaching the NCAA Championships for the first time in 2023.

Awarii Dunes also serves as the practice facility for UNK with their golf academy. Located at the end of the practice range, the golf academy is available for the Lopers to practice at year-round. The facility has a southwest putting green and Swish Turf mats for the golfers to hit off of year-round. There are three swing hitting bays with garage style doors that open towards the driving range so that the Lopers can practice rain or shine.
