Aqualopers Swim Past Flames, Place 2nd in Iowa

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's swimming & diving team returned to the pool this weekend, beating the College of St. Mary in a dual, 109-93, Friday night in Omaha and then placing runner up in the Morningside College Invite Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.

At Morningside, the Aqualopers racked up 571.50 points to come in ahead of Division III Coe College of Iowa (562), Iowa Central C.C. (459.50), College of St. Mary (435) and Division III Simpson College of Iowa (288).

The host Mustangs won both the women's (738) and men's (837.50) titles.

True freshman Cassie Bonds (Wichita, Kans.) was the only Loper to win an individual event in Iowa, turning in a 26.35 in the 50 free. She also tied for second in the 100 free (59.11) and was third in the 100 fly (1:06.21).

Veterans Heather Glodt (Pierre, S.D.) and Brianna Nelsen (Lincoln Northeast) also cracked the top three at Morningside. Glodt was runner up in the 200 individual medley (2:24.75) and came in third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.02) while Nelsen was second in both the 400 I.M. (5:13.45) and 200 breaststroke (2:43.09).

Also in Iowa, Grand Island freshman Jayne McGovern was fourth in the 500 free (5:52.04).

In Omaha, UNK won five individual events and both the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Nelsen was the star, taking the gold in the 200 I..M. (2:28.48) and 100 backstroke (1:11.75) and swimming the second leg on the 200 medley relay team (2:04.38).

UNK hosts Northern State next Friday night in Cushing Pool.
