Baseball Goes 2-2 at the Metrodome

Aussie Jordan Mitchelhill continues to be a force on the leadoff spot
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team went 2-2 over a 17 hour span this weekend at the Metrodome in Minnesota.

On Saturday night, the Lopers (7-3) split a double header with Augustana, winning the first game 12-3 and dropping the second contest, 7-3. The team then got up early Sunday morning to play a double dip with Concordia-St. Paul.

The Golden Bears (2-3) hit a walk off homer in the 8th inning to win the first game, 4-3, with UNK winning the second game by that same score.

Statistics from the games the Vikings (4-4) will not be available until Monday.

Against CSP in game one, UNK led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. Three Bear errors allowed the Lopers to score twice in the fourth; another Concordia miscue helped junior 1b Andrew Haake (Beatrice) come around to score in the sixth.

The Bears rally started in its half of the sixth after a walk and error put two on. Two singles tied the game but the damage was stopped after a 6-4-3 double play.

UNK hit back-to-back singles in the top of the 7th but two pop ups ended the threat and inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Brenden Furrow hit his 19th career dinger to give Concordia the win.

In defeat, junior 2b Jordan Mitchelhill (Melbourne) and junior LF Brian Chirtz (Arvada, Colo.) each went 2 for 4.

Concordia tried to rally in the second game as they got into a 3-0 hole after three innings. Mitchelhill (2 for 4, two runs) had an RBI in a two-run UNK third with senior SS Blake Cover (1 for 2, two RBI's) having a sac fly in the first.

The Bears made it a 3-2 game in the 5th but junior Roy Metter (Phoenix) managed to leave runners at second and third by getting a ground ball back to him to end the inning.

After a Loper insurance run scored in the fifth, CSP tallied one more run in the sixth. Junior Ricky Muir (Easton, Conn.) then recorded his third save of 2010 by retiring the final three batters he faced.

UNK is scheduled to begin RMAC play next weekend at Colorado Mines.
