Men's Basketball Remains Hot, Beats Another Top East Team

Michael McLeod had his best game as a Loper
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball made over half its shots for a second straight game, and got a season-high 17 points from junior forward Michael McLeod, to upset Colorado School of Mines, 84-70, Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (13-13, 8-10 RMAC) has now beaten the top teams in the RMAC's East Division, Mines and Metro State, in the last week. Both the Oreidiggers (16-10, 13-5 RMAC) and Roadrunners are regionally ranked and vying for spots in the NCAA Tournament.

The Lopers chances for a spot in the RMAC Tournament are still strong; UNK is fighting UCCS, Colorado Christian and Chadron State for the last two spots in the East Division.

Mines, which had won 3 of 4 over the Lopers, saw its 10-game win streak end tonight. That was tied for the longest in school history.

Moment of the Game
After shooting 67.6 percent from the field -- 4rth best in school history -- last Saturday in at win at Metro, UNK was around 60 percent for most of tonight and ended up at 56.6 percent (30 of 53).

This marks the first time this season UNK has had back-to-back games of 50 percent field goal shooting.

Kearney also had just 7 turnovers, a season-low, and had a plus 5 rebounding margin (32-27). In a 76-61 loss at Mines earlier this year, UNK was out boarded by 13.

Leading most of the way, the Lopers were up 57-44 after a three from sophomore Chris Deans. Mines responded quickly, sinking three triples in a four minute span to make it just a five point game, 63-58, by the 7:51 mark.

UNK countered with a trey from freshman Akeem Morissaint and the lead went up to 14 points, 77-63, with 3:42 to go. The Lopers then secured the win at the line, sinking 17 of 24 freebies.
