Baseball Wins 2 of 3 at Mines; Loschen, Oliver Star

Patrick Oliver's first homer as a Loper ties the game at 6
Kearney, Neb. - Senior Jared Loschen tied the school record for wins by a pitcher and junior outfielder Patrick Oliver hit a two out, three run homer in the top of the ninth to help the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team take two of three games from Colorado School of Mines this weekend in Golden.

Weather pushed the series back a day and changed game times as well. It also created less the ideal field conditions on Sunday, one reason the team combined to make 10 errors.

Mines won the series opener, 9-7, while UNK took the final two games, 5-4 and 8-6 (10 innings). UNK is now 9-4 on the year with the Orediggers at 4-3.

Loschen (Kearney) moved to 4-0 by allowing three earned runs over seven full innings on Saturday. He is now tied with Ken Vergith (1973-76) for the most wins by a Loper pitcher in a career with 22.

A 2010 preseason All-American, Loschen is now 22-11, covering 42 appearances and 38 starts. Vergith, who holds the UNK record for innings pitched at 246.1, went 22-14 over four seasons.

Loschen blanked Mines for four innings before the 'Diggers scored four times in hits half of the fifth to make it a one run game. But, Loschen allowed just one base runner over the next two innings to keep Mines at bay.

Senior shortstop Blake Cover (2 for 4) and junior outfielder Nick Arapkiles (2 for 3) led the Lopers at the plate. Also, junior catcher Felix Segovia (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a solo homer in the second.

Oliver (Broomfield, Colo./Otero J.C.) made sure UNK won the series by tying Sunday's game at six and forcing extra innings.

Mines took advantage of six Loper errors to grab a 6-3 lead. UNK had a chance to put a dent into that lead by loading the bases in the eighth but a ground out to second ended the inning.

In the top of the 9th inning, juniors Brian Chritz (Arvada, Colo.) and Andrew Haake (Beatrice) sandwiched singles around two ground ball outs. Oliver (3 for 5) then stepped to the plate and blasted a game tying homer over the left field fence.

Junior Ricky Muir (Easton, Conn.) earned the win by throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. He saw his teammates score two times in the top of the 10th as junior Ben Townsend (Kearney) singled with two outs and junior Luke Stamp (Persia, Iowa) followed with a triple down the right field line.

On the play, Stamp (2 for 6, two runs) scored on an errant throw. Also, Chritz ended the day 4 for 5 with three runs and an RBI.

The series opener featured 23 hits and 17 runners left on base. Down 8-7 after seven, the Lopers had the leadoff runner reach in the top of the 8th inning but a 4-6-3 double play ball ended the threat.

Mines then added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from catcher Anthony Siderius. Andrew Ryan earned the win by allowing one run in five innings of relief.

UNK's scheduled home opener vs. Concordia on Tuesday will likely be postponed; the Lopers are scheduled to host Colorado-State-Pueblo in a three-game RMAC series this weekend.
