Loschen Becomes All-Time Wins Leader as Baseball Sweeps Regis

Jared Loschen - Winningest Pitcher in UNK History
Kearney, Neb. - Senior Jared Loschen won his 23rd career game, a new school record, as the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team snapped a five-game skid by sweeping Regis, 8-7 and 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Denver.

This three-game RMAC series was originally scheduled for Memorial Field but moved to Denver due to weather. The Rangers (8-9, 5-4 RMAC) will now visit Kearney in late April.

During its losing streak, UNK (11-9, 4-5 RMAC) was having trouble scoring runs. On Friday, the team was blanked for the first six innings before scoring six in the seventh and one more in the ninth. Regis, turning five double plays, hung on for a 9-7 win.

The Loper bats continued to wake up as a three-run first inning in game one on Saturday featured four hits, including a two-run single from junior RF Patrick Oliver (Broomfield, Colo.).

UNK tallied another run in the second and Loschen was rolling along, limiting Regis to no runs and two hits over the first three innings.

However, a one out walk and  then a homer from DH Zach Blakeley made it a 4-2 game in the fourth. Regis scored another run in the inning on a double but the Lopers responded with a three spot in its half of the sixth.

Ahead 8-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Rangers first three batters singled, cutting the deficit to one. Junior Ricky Muir (Easton, Conn.), who hadn't given up a run in 10 previous appearances this year, managed to get a 6-4-3 double play to squash the Regis rally.

With the tying run at third, Muir then got a pop up to center to end the game and record his fourth save. Loschen (5-1) allowed five runs and had five K's in 6.1 innings.

Ken Vergith (22 wins) held the Loper record for the last 34 years.

In the leadoff spot, junior 2b Jordan Mitchelhill (Melbourne) went 3 for 5 with two RBI's and junior LF Brian Chritz (Arvada, Colo.) went 4 for 4 with a run scored.

Junior Andre O'Connor (Prescott Valley, Ariz.) almost stole Loschen's thunder by throwing a three hit complete game in the night cap.

The McCook C.C. transfer struck out five, walked just two and blanked Regis over the final five innings.

UNK needed this effort as the Lopers were being held in check by Gerard Mohrmann. However, a five-run seventh featured two Regis errors and a three run homer from Beatrice junior Andrew Haake (3 for 4, 4 RBI's).

The Lopers, weather permitting, will host NW Missouri State in a double header on Tuesday and then play four RMAC games at Colorado Christian next weekend.
