Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney softball team scored early and often to sweep a double header from Mesa State,
13-4 (5 innings) and
6-5, Saturday afternoon in Grand Junction, Colo.
Sunday's double header was canceled due to inclement weather and those games will not be made up. UNK is now 5-5 (4-2 RMAC) on the year while the Mavericks drop to 3-7 (1-7 RMAC).
Playing at a newly renovated Bergman Field, UNK scored four times in the first and five more times in the second to grab a 9-0 lead in the first game.
Among the six hits during this stretch was a three-run double from sophomore 2b
Ali Seberger (Lexington). UNK finished off Mesa with a four run fourth that featured a two-run single from freshman RF
Taylor Fernau (Blair).
Freshman
Becky Dunn (Papillion) earned the winning by allowing 11 hits over five full innings. Mesa did hit three homers but left eight on base and was never really in the game.
Both Seberger and Fernau finished 2 for 3 with three RBI's with four others collecting two hits.
In game two, UNK jumped out to a 4-0 lead but needed a two-run homer from junior DP
Jessie Thomas (Yutan) to win the game.
A lefty at the plate, Thomas (3 for 3, three RBI's) broke a four all tie in the fifth with a one out homer to left. Mesa led off the seventh with a homer but sophomore
Kirstie Hiatt (McCook) got three fly outs to end the game and earn her first win of 2010.
Allowing two earned runs over seven innings, Hiatt also fanned five Mavericks.
Fernau (3 for 4, two runs, two RBI's) joined Thomas as Lopers with big efforts at the plate.
UNK heads to New Mexico Highlands next weekend for four more RMAC games.
