Kearney, Neb. - The Chadron State softball team had three big innings at the plate to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney,
5-4 and
7-5, Wednesday afternoon at Dryden Park.
Due to weather, the games were moved up three hours to an 11:00 a.m. start. The Eagles (9-14, 6-8 RMAC) snap an three game losing streak while the Lopers (5-9, 4-5 RMAC) have now lost four in a row.
In game one, Chadron rallied from a 4-0 hole by scoring four in the fifth and one in the sixth. Chadron then jumped on the Lopers in game two, getting out to a 3-0 first inning lead. They would then break a three all tie with a two run fourth.
UNK started the day on a good note by having six hits, to score three runs, in the first inning of game one. However, Cassie Humphrey (4-7) settled down, allowing just three more hits and a run over the next six innings.
The Eagles tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on a two out, three-run homer from Allison Hendricksen (2 for 4). UNK loaded the bases in its half of the fifth but a fielder's choice and a ground out kept things tied.
Chadron then scored the winning run when Melissa Lohr (2 for 4, two RBI's) hit a two out single to center. in the sixth For the game, Humphrey fanned three and went 2 for 4 at the plate in the leadoff spot.
UNK tried to turn the tables in the nightcap by twice rallying to tie things up. However, Chadron broke a four all tie in the fourth thanks to a double from Humphrey (3 for 4, two runs). A Loper error then allowed another Eagle to score.
An inning earlier, the Lopers had the bases loaded with one out. Like the first game, Chadron got a fielder's choice and ground out to end the threat.
