Baseball Splits with No. 12 New Mexico Highlands

Patrick Oliver hit two HR's on Friday
Kearney, Neb. - Junior Luke Stamp scored on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Nebraska-Kearney win the second game of a double header, 6-5, with No. 12 New Mexico Highlands Friday night at Memorial Field.

The Cowboys (19-6, 9-3 RMAC) got two home runs from first baseman Jason Carr to hold off the Lopers (18-10, 7-6 RMAC) in the first game, 9-6. That snapped an eight-game Kearney win streak.

In game two, UNK tied the contest at five when junior OF Patrick Oliver hit a solo homer, his second of the day, with two outs in the fifth. The Lopers were poised to win the game in the sixth as they had the bases loaded with just one out.

However, Highlands' David Saiz got a pop up and come backer to stop the threat.

After junior Austin Parker (3-1) got the final two outs of the seventh, Stamp managed a one out walk against Daiz in the bottom of the inning. Luke's brother, Mike, then pinch hit and drew another base on balls.

Daiz did record a strike out and then junior 2b Jordan Mitchelhill hit a ground ball to third that forced Oscar Sigla to charge. He picked up the ball but his throw was a bit low and Carr couldn't corral it, allowing Stamp to score.

UNK had command of the game early on, scoring three times in the first on three hits and a walk. However, Carr hit his third homer of the day, a two-run shot, to highlight a four run Cowboy fourth.

In game one, Carr went 4 for 5 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Highlands never trailed, scoring three runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

UNK did threaten in the bottom of the ninth as junior Blake Cover (2 for 4), with one out and the bases loaded, hit a deep shot to center. But, the ball was caught by center fielder Christian Garcia for a sac fly.

The two teams will try and play tomorrow; more then likely, they will play a double header Sunday at noon
