Kearney, Neb. – Western New Mexico won two of three games against the Nebraska-Kearney softball team,
2-0,
4-2 and
3-4, on Sunday afternoon at Harmon Park.
Due to the rain on Saturday and field conditions at Dryden Park, games were moved to Harmon.
In game one, Western (17-12, 13-4 RMAC) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning as shortstop Kristina Barr (3 for 4) hit a two-run homer to left field.
Sophomore Kristie Hiatt (McCook) pitched a complete game in the loss, striking out four and walking two. The Lopers got two hits from senior catcher
Sara Dunn (Papillion) and senior SS
Kelsey Smith (Blair).
Game two saw the Mustangs score single runs in four innings to beat the Lopers by two. Once again, Barr hit a home run but this time it was to right field. She got another three hits in four plate appearances with two RBI's.
UNK (6-11, 5-6 RMAC) tried to rally by scoring in the second and fifth innings. In the fifth, Dunn (2 for 3) hit her first home run of the season, making it a one-run deficit.
Game three saw the Lopers score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and earn an unlikely victory.
The Mustangs led 3-0 after the first, thanks to a two-run single from catcher Brittney Batten and three other hits. In relief, Hiatt shut down Western after that, throwing 6.2 innings of scoreless ball.
UNK's runs came as the result of thee Mustang errors. Dunn and senior
Alissa Larsen (Lincoln) started the rally with back-to-back singles to start the seventh.
Western's first error was by pitcher Hannah Dotson, who was trying to field a sac bunt by junior
Mallory Nutt (Cozad). That miscue helped score pinch runner
Shayla Frost.
The second error came from second basemen Amy Aicher and allowed Nutt to score from third. After a passed ball helped another Loper score, freshman
Taylor Fernau (Balir) hit a ball to short that Wetsern couldn't corral.
That allowed senior 1b
Laura Gormley to score the winning run. For the day, Dunn went 4 for 8 to lead UNK at the plate.
UNK hosts Nebraska-Omaha in a doubleheader Tuesday at Dryden Park.
