Baseball Sweeps Series from Orediggers

Brian Chritz hit a homer in game two
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team overcame deficits of 4-1 and 4-0 to sweep Colorado School of Mines, 7-4 and 7-5, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

The sixth ranked team in the Central Region, UNK improves to 26-15 (15-11 RMAC) while the Orediggers fall to 7-25 (3-23 RMAC).

In game one, Mines led 4-1 after 2 1/2 innings. However, the deficit could've been more had the Lopers not turned double plays in the first and third innings.

Arizona junior Roy Metter (3-4) gave UNK a chance to come back as he threw 5.2 innings of scoreless relief. During his time, he fanned five and walked just one.

Scoring singles runs in the second through fourth innings, the Lopers took the lead for good when junior OF Brian Chritz (Arvada, Colo.) hit a two-run single with one out in the sixth. Two of the three 'Digger errors then allowed the Lopers to add two insurance runs in the seventh.

Omaha junior Jake Kresse blanked Mines in the ninth to earn his first save as a Loper. At the plate, junior DH Mike Stamp (Persia, Ia.) went 2 for 4.

The series finale saw Mines erupt for four in the top of the first thanks to five hits, the big one being a two-out bloop single from Matt Spirek. However, junior Todd Stachura (3-4) allowed no runs, and just three hits over the next five innings.

Like the first game, UNK chipped away, tying the game in the second on an RBI single from senior SS Blake Cover (Kearney). A Mines error in the third allowed junior 1b Andrew Haake (Beatrice) to score from second and the Lopers wouldn't trail again.

Kresse recorded his second save as he again pitched the final inning. With runners two runners on and two outs, a slow roller to third was picked up by junior 3b Luke Valerius and he just threw out Matt Pullos at first to end the game.

Chirtz went 2 for 3 with three runs scored, Stamp went 2 for 4 again and Cover tied the school record for runs in a career (179; Mike Racliff, 1996-99) by crossing home in the first game.

UNK plays at NW Missouri State Tuesday then hosts Colorado State-Pueblo in a key three game series next weekend.
