Kearney, Neb. - Senior shortstop
Blake Cover and junior first baseman
Andrew Haake each drove in four runs to lead the Nebraska-Kearney baseball to a
19-9 win over Colorado State-Pueblo Friday night at Memorial Field.
In a battle for the Plains Division lead, UNK (28-15) is now in first with a 16-11 mark. The ThunderWolves are at 21-18 overall and 15-11 in league play.
The contest was a see saw affair for five innings as the Lopers scored two in the first, and three in the third and fourth innings, to grab an 8-7 lead. However, Pueblo scored a run in its half of the fifth to tie things at eight.
That's when UNK took over, tallying three in the sixth, six in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Colorado junior
Austin Parker (5-1) held the T-Wolves at bay, allowing three hits and one run over 2.2 innings. Blair senior
Ryan Seefus then finished another good outing for the Loper bullpen by throwing 1.1 innings of hitless ball.
Cover (Kearney Catholic) tied Travis Kerkman's school record for hits -- 252 -- with a single to right in the seventh. He had a chance for the record in the eighth but he hit into a fielder's choice to end the night 4 for 6.
Batting from the sixth spot, Haake (Beatrice) went 3 for 5 with two runs scored. In the sixth with the bases loaded, he knocked in the third and final run with a deep single to right that hit high off the wall.
The seventh included a lead off homer from junior catcher
Felix Segovia (Las Vegas, Nev.), his second round tripper of the week, and a two-run single from Haake.
The teams will finish the three-game series with a double header tomorrow or Sunday. First pitch would likely be noon on either day.
