Fifth Ranked Metro State Sweeps Softball

Kearney, Neb. – Fifth ranked Metro State took four games from the Nebraska-Kearney softball team over the weekend in Denver, Colo.

Due to the weather, games were changed to one on Saturday and three on Sunday.

Metro has now won 12 in a row, allowing no more then three runs in any of those games. The 'Runners have also won 13 games on the year by "eight running" the opposition.

In Saturday's lone game, Metro (36-3, 33-2 RMAC) limited the Lopers (12-25, 11-16 RMAC) to five hits and then scored seven runs to record a 7-0 win.

UNLV transfer Christie Robinson pitched the complete game shutout, striking out six and walking none to improve to 15-1 on the season.

The Roadrunners would score two runs in the first and fourth innings and also tacked on three runs in the second. Recording nine hits, Metro also took advantage of six walks to score its runs.

Senior catcher Sara Dunn (Papillion) had two of the Lopers five hits.

In game one on Sunday, UNK played from behind once again as Metro scored two runs in the third. UNK would score an unearned run in the fourth to close the gap but Robinson (16-1) was again tough, tossing a four-hit complete game.

Metro added an insurance run bottom half of the inning when Jennessa Tesone belted her 11th homer of the year to make the final score 3-1.

Sophomore Dani Mowinkel (Logan View) pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing three runs on five hits, three walks while striking out two.

Game two saw the Roadrunners jump out to a four run lead after two innings. That's all the home team needed as Brittany Moss (9-1) tossed a complete game two-hitter.

In the Loper third, sophomore OF Austin Wilson (McCook) walked to start the inning and then sophomore 2b Ali Seberger (Lexington) hit a single that advanced to Wilson to third.

After senior OF Alissa Larsen (Lincoln) reached via fielder's choice, she stole her 23rd stolen base and an errant throw to second allowed Wilson to score.

Allowing just eight hits (two homers) in the 6-1 loss, sophomore Kristie Hiatt (McCook) went the distance, walking four and fanning four.

In the third and final game of the day, Metro hit four homers -- including a game-ending Grand Slam -- and finished with 13 hits in a  14-3 five inning victory.

Mowinkel and senior SS Kelsey Smith (Blair) each hit solo homers to provide the Loper offense. For the series, junior DP Jessie Thomas (Yutan) batted a team-best .444 (4 for 9) with Seberger coming in at .333 (3 for 9).

UNK is at Chadron State Tuesday and then hosts Colorado-Colorado Springs next weekend to finish the regular season.
