Pitchers Help Beat Hastings; April 6th Game Completed

Ricky Muir
Kearney, Neb. - Junior Andre O'Connor and senior Ryan Seefus combined on a three-hit complete game shut out, and junior Ricky Muir set a new school-record for saves in a season, as the Nebraska-Kearney beat Hastings, 13-5 and 2-0, Tuesday night at Memorial Field.

UNK has won 10 in a row, and 23 of its last 29, to beat 32-15. The Broncos, meanwhile, see a four-game win streak end and are at 13-29 for the spring.

The night began with the completion of an April 6th contest that was called due rain. Beginning in the top of the third with UNK ahead 7-2, the Lopers scored two runs in three straight innings (fourth through sixth) to break open a 7-4 game.

Including what happened on April 6th, senior SS Blake Cover (Kearney Catholic) went 4 for 5 with three runs and three RBI's while three other Lopers at two hits a piece. On the mound, Lincoln senior Nick Hall earned his first win of 2010 by allowing no earned runs over two innings.

Muir (Easton, Conn.) struck out three over the final three innings to record his eighth save. In 1990, Jim Berger recorded seven saves to set the Loper season mark.

O'Connor improved to 7-3 by striking out five and walking none over the first five innings of the second game. Hastings managed just three hits off the Arizona native, all singles.

For the night, the Broncos went 11 straight innings without scoring a run.

After O'Connor left, Seefus (Blair) fanned three over the final two innings to record his first save of the season. That also marked UNK's 15th save as a team.

UNK needed this strong pitching effort as four Hastings hurlers limited the Lopers to just four hits, two coming from senior OF Ben Townsend (2 for 3). The lefty, batting in the nine hole, knocked in the second run of the game with a ground out to second in the second.

Junior DH Andrew Haake (Beatrice) had an RBI single in the first to score the game's only other run. The hit came after Hastings committed three errors.

UNK hosts Regis in a three-game RMAC series this weekend to conclude the regular season.
