Kearney, Neb. - Sophomore right hander Charlie Henderson threw a complete game and senior outfielder J.T. Putt belted a three-run homer in the seventh inning to help Regis beat the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team,
7-5, Friday night at Memorial Field.
Due to light rain, the game was pushed back to a 7:00 p.m. start.
Despite seeing its 10-game win streak come to an end, the Lopers (32-16, 18-12 RMAC) claimed the RMAC's Plains Division title tonight. In Golden, Colo., Colorado Mines beat CSU-Pueblo, 10-1. No matter what happens the rest of the weekend, second-place Pueblo (15-14 RMAC) cannot catch UNK in the standings.
By winning the Plains, Kearney will be the second-seed in next week's six-team RMAC Tournament.
Trailing once again after the top of the first, UNK came back to lead 5-3 after six full innings. Henderson (5-3) dropped a foul ball with two outs in the fifth and that eventually allowed UNK to score two runs and take its first lead of the night.
The Lopers, however, did leave the bases loaded in the fifth, making them 8 for 52 (.154) at home in that situation. And after giving up a lead off double in the sixth, Henderson retired the next 10 Lopers.
With two outs in the Regis seventh and one on via walk, Jesus Arzaga drew another bases on ball. That brought up Putt, who hit his eighth homer of the year on a 2-2 count.
First baseman Alex Haag (4 for 5, two runs, 2 RBI's) followed with a triple and then came home on a bloop single to right center to give the Rangers an insurance run.
UNK tried to rally in the ninth as junior 2b
Jordan Mitchelhill (2 for 4) hit a one out single. After junior LF Brian Chritz (2 for 4) walked, Henderson mangaed to get a strikeout and pop up to end the threat and game.
Senior
Jared Loschen fell to 8-4 as he gave up seven runs on eight hits and three walks in 6.2 innings. Junior
Austin Parker did come in and throw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The two team will finish the regular season tomorrow with a double header starting at noon.
