Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team ended the 2010 regular season in exciting fashion by using two rallies to sweep Regis,
10-9 (10 innings) and
11-8, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
UNK is now 34-16 and 20-12 in the RMAC. This is the second Loper team (2008) to win 34 games in a year; the '81 Lopers hold the record with 37 victories.
Kearney will be the second seed in next week's RMAC Tournament and play fifth-seed Colorado State-Pueblo Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
On a day that featured over six hours of baseball, the Lopers needed some magic to sweep the Rangers (15-27, 11-22 RMAC).
In game one, three-run homers by junior 1b
Andrew Haake (Beatrice) and junior DH
Mike Stamp (Persia, Ia.) seemingly gave the Lopers a comfortable 8-3 lead heading into the top of the ninth.
However, Regis scored five runs -- on five hits, two errors and a walks -- to force extra innings. Pinch hitter Aaron Salvucci hit a two out single to right to bring home the tying run.
After UNK stranded the potential winning run at second in its half of the ninth, senior OF J.T. Putt (3 for 5) led off the tenth with his second homer of the game. Over the series, he hit .462 with four HR's and eight RBI's.
However, the Lopers had some of its own power as Haake (2 for 4, 2 runs, 4 RBI's) hit another rocket over the center field wall to lead off the bottom of the tenth. The next three Lopers then reached safely via a double, intentional walk and fielder's choice.
Junior 2b
Jordan Mitchelhill (2 for 5) was up next and an inside pitch got away from the Ranger catcher, allowing pinch runner Nick Arapakiles (Broomfield, Colo.) to score the winning run.
Arizona junior
Roy Metter had another strong start on the mound (7.0 IP, five hits, three runs, five K's) with junior
Austin Parker (Brighton, Colo. moving to 6-1 by allowing one run over 1.2 innings.
The excitement didn't stop as the first inning of game two featured nine runs and seven hits. The five-run Ranger first featured a two-run double from Putt while the Lopers got a two-run single from Stamp (2 for 2, 2 runs, 3 RBI's) to close the gap to a run.
Regis did put two more runs on the board in the second but the Kearney bullpen allowed just one run and three hits over the next five innings.
UNK grabbed its first lead of the game with a five-run sixth that included four hits and four walks. A base on balls to junior C
Felix Segovia (Las Vegas, Nev.) brought home the go ahead run and then a single and another walk brought home two insurance runs.
Junior
Ricky Muir (Easton, Conn.) worked three scoreless innings of relief to improve to 3-0 on the season.
