Softball Season Ends with Two Losses in RMAC Tourney

Sophomore OF Austin Wilson hit a home run against Colorado Mines
Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team lost two games in the RMAC Tournament to host Metro State, 6-1, and to Colorado School Mines, 9-1, Thursday afternoon in Denver, Colo.

UNK ends its season with a 15-30 record.

In game one against the 4th-ranked Roadrunners (41-3), the Lopers played well but Metro hit three home runs to win by five and extend its win streak to 17.

Freshman Becky Dunn (5-10) blanked the powerful 'Runners for the first three innings before a three-run shot  by SS and lead off hitter Amber Roundtree (2 for 4) in the bottom of the fourth.

The second homer came an inning latter and was hit by 3b Tara Mickelson, her 19th dinger of the year.

UNK scored its lone run in the top of the six off the bat of junior 3b Cassie Keck (2 for 2), who brought home senior OF Alissa Larsen (Lincoln) with an RBI single.

But, Metro tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning when CF Molly Clark hit a two-run bomb to right.

In the loss, Dunn pitched a complete game 11-hitter, striking out eight and walking none. RMAC Pitcher of the Year Christie Robinson pitched a complete game three-hitter, fanning two Lopers to move to 19-1 on the season.

In an elimination game against the fifth-seeded Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines (23-25), the Loper bats were again silent, producing just one run on seven hits.

Mines grabbed the lead for good as they scored two in the second. Catcher Rachel Meine hit a single to center to score the first run with 2b Lauren Aberle coming home on a wild pitch.

UNK scored its only run in the fifth on home run by sophomore OF Austin Wilson (McCook). Batting in the eight hole, she finished 2 for 3 and ended 2010 with four homers.

The 'Diggers went on to score three in the sixth and four more in the seventh inning to advance and face the loser of Metro and Mesa State.

Besides Wilson, Larsen went 3 for 4 from her lead off spot with three Loper pitchers throwing at least 1.2 innings in the game.

With the losses, UNK says goodbye to four seniors on the team in Larsen, catcher Sara Dunn, 1b Laura Gormely and SS Kelsey Smith.
