Kearney, Neb. - Despite having more kills and digs, and having a better attack percentage, the 10th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team fell at 3rd-ranked Wayne State
(28-30, -25, 22-25, -16, 12-15) Tuesday night in Rice Auditorium.
A school-record crowd of 1,536 watched Wayne improve to 11-0 and earn its first win over the Lopers (10-3) in four years.
UNK trailed in the match 1-0 and 2-1 before blitzing the Wildcats by nine points in the fourth set. That momentum, however, didn't last as Wayne broke a five all tie in the fifth set with four straight points that turned the tide.
In the fifth, an unforced UNK hitting error gave Wayne a 6-5 lead. The 'Cats Shelby Schultz and Mindy Moody followed with a block and then senior setter Diedra Artz served up one her team's six aces to make it an 8-5 score. A Wayne kill followed, prompting UNK to take its second timeout in as many points.
The Lopers tried to come back, making it a 14-12 score after a block from senior middle
Jeri Walkowiak and freshman outside
Ashley Leitner (Lincoln SW). However, Wayne junior outside Tali Fredrickson recorded a kill right after to end the set and match.
On the night, UNK recorded 74 kills, 116 digs, 12.0 team blocks and a .180 attack percentage. Wayne had 61 kills, 96 digs, 12.0 team blocks and a .143 hitting efficiency.
The Lopers, taking six less swings then Wayne, did have six more hitting errors, 35-29.
Sophomore outside
Ariel Krolikowski (Grand Island) paced the Lopers with 24 kills, 27 digs and a .353 attack percentage. Her fifth double double of the year, she was just five kills short of tying Kelli Bunger's school-record for kills in a match.
Also on the outside, Leitner -- who was scheduled to redshirt but brought out of that last weekend -- had 12 kills and five digs.  In the middle, Walkowiak had 17 kills and three blocks with Omaha freshman
Ellie Pesavento recording 11 kills and having a team-high nine blocks.
Finally, senior libero
Katlyn Heiserman (Manchester, Iowa) had a match-high 28 digs with senior setter
