Jameson Buzzer Beater Lifts Women's Basketball to Another Close Win

Senior Megan Becker
Kearney, Neb. – Junior reserve Lea Ann Jameson hit a turnaround three pointer as time expired to lift the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team to a 78-76 overtime win over Colorado-Colorado Springs Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (9-7, 8-4 RMAC) has won four in a row, the last three by a total of 12 points. The Lopers also improve to 21-3 all-time against the Mountain Lions (6-10, 5-7 RMAC).

In the extra session, Colorado Springs was ahead 76-75 with the shot clock winding down. Starter Ashley Miller missed a contested jumper with 11 seconds left and junior wing Vanessa Leeper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) grabbed the rebound.

Leeper then brought the ball up the court but was defended by several Mountain Lions. Once past mid-court, she threw the ball to freshman point guard Sarah Hix (Broomfield, Colo.). With the game clock almost at zeroes, UNK called a timeout; there was just 0.3 seconds left but the officials added a full second.

After the Lopers and UCCS each called a timeout, Hix looked to in bound the ball from the right sideline. Jameson (Minden) came off a screen, caught the ball, turned and made about a 21-footer to win the game.

Springs broke the 12th and final tie of the game when guard Jessica Brown made a driving layup with 53 seconds left to make it 76-74.

Fourteen seconds later, senior post Megan Becker (Beaver City) made a ninth straight free throw, but missed the second one, to give UCCS that 76-75 lead.

UNK appeared to have the game won in regulation as they led 65-61 with 30 seconds left. However, Miller hit about a 25 footer from the top of the key to make it a one point game with 22 seconds to go.

Leeper, a career 85 percent free throw shooter, then went 1 of 2 at the line. After a series of timeouts, guard Lauren Wolfinger tied the game at 68, and forced an extra five minutes, with a last second baseline jumper.

UNK used the trio of Becker (27 points), Leeper (17) and junior guard Debi Johnson (21) to get the job done while the Mountain Lions saw nine different players score with seven tallying between five and 13 points.

Overcoming another halftime deficit, the Lopers finished 18 of 22 at the line (81.8 pct.) compared to 71.4 percent (15 of 21) for Springs. Overall, the statistics were extremely close across the board.

To reach her season-high point total, Becker went 9 of 12 from the field and 9 of 10 at the line. She also had eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Having 15 points after the break, Leeper recorded her fourth double double of the year as she grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Finally, Johnson (Elsie) went 4 of 7 from behind the arc to have her second straight 20 plus point game.

Miller (13) led UCCS in scoring with Wolfinger, the team's leading scorer on the year, coming off the bench to supply 12 points and four assists. Also, starting guard Jeri Pikul had 12 points and Brown added nine points, seven assists, four steals and four rebounds.

UNK hosts CSU-Pueblo tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. The start time is being pushed back a ½ hour due to a delay in the Pueblo/Chadron State game tonight.
