Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's swimming team scored 236 points to place ninth out of 12 schools at the annual Grinnell College Invite this weekend in Iowa.
Nebraska-Omaha won the women's race by tallying 1,176 points with Division III Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) close behind with 984 points. UNK came in ahead of Simpson College (Ia.), Knox College (Ill.) and the College of St. Mary.
On Friday, the Aqualopers scored 115 points with junior
Heather Glodt (Pierre, S.D.) and sophomore
Brianna Nelsen (Lincoln Northeast) starring in the 200 backstroke.
Glodt had UNK's top individual finish of the meet in this event by swimming a 2:35.14 to come in fifth and tally 18 team points. Nelsen was six spots back thanks to a 2:237.23.
This pair also swam on the 200 free relay (13th/1:47.24) and 400 medley relay (16th/4:32.14) teams that combined to score 60 points.
UNK scored in five individual events on Saturday and also picked up points in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Kansas freshman
Cassie Bonds placed 11th in both the 50 free (25.66) and 100 fly (1:02.74) with Glodt 12th in the 100 fly (1:03.49) and Nelsen 11th in the 200 free (2:03.31). Finally, Grand Island true freshman
Jayne McGovern finished 19th in the 1,650 free (20:14.17).
Several of these times this weekend are among the best in school history. Bonds now ranks third all-time in the 100 fly and sixth in the 50 free with Glodt fourth in the 100 breast and seventh in the 100 fly.
UNK hosts UNO next Saturday to close out the regular season.
