Men’s Basketball Holds Off Late Rally To Beat Christian

Kearney, Neb. – True freshman Mike Dentlinger (Omaha) scored a game high 29 points to lead the University of Nebraska Kearney 78-70 victory over Colorado Christian University Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

After tonight's win the Lopers improve to 8-10 and 6-8 in the RMAC, while the Cougars drop to 5-12 and 4-10 in the RMAC. The Cougars have won the last five of seven meetings; however the Lopers still lead the all-time series 30-7. The Cougars defeated the Lopers back on December 18th in Lakewood by the score of 75-68.

UNK would get the first points on a layup and free throw by Dentlinger, and then CCU would go on a 15-6 scoring run to lead 15-9 with 15:29 left in the first half. CCU was led by Michael Stamer with six of the 15 points during the scoring run.

Nebraska Kearney would answer Colorado Christian scoring run by going on 18-2 run that would cover ten minutes to lead 27-17 with 4:44 left in the first half. Nebraska Kearney was lead by junior Chris Deans (Hemingford) with seven points, followed by Dentlinger with five points.

CCU would cut the ten point led to two at the half and trail 32-34.

Each team would shoot over 50 percent in the first twenty minutes of actions. Christian would shoot 68.2 percent (15-22) from the floor, while Kearney shot 53.8 percent (14-26) from the field.

In the second twenty minutes Christian would either tie the game or trail by single digits but could never take the lead.

After tying the score at 40, Nebraska Kearney would score the next 11 of 13 points to lead 51-42 with 12:09 left in the game. Nebraska Kearney would have the lead at double digits for the next 11 minutes.

UNK hot shooting would continue in the second half by making 65 percent (13-20) from the floor, while CCU would cool off to a 48.3 percent (14-29) from the field in the half. Just like in the first half both teams shot over 50 percent for the game. UNK would shoot 58.7 percent for the game and CCU shoot 56.9 for the game.

The Cougars were led in scoring by Stamer with 17 points going 8-9 from the floor, followed by Rye Olson with 14 points shooting 4-6 from the floor, Abram Ziemer would add 12 points and five rebounds, finally Josh McBeth would contribute 10 points off the bench.

The Lopers were lead by Dentlinger with 29 points going 11-13 from the field, junior Max Froehlich (Pierce) would add 16 points by going 9-10 from the line with seven assist, and Deans would score 10 points off the bench by going 2-2 from behind the arc.

Dentlinger in the last two games has gone 22-31 from the field and 15-18 from the free throw line to score 59 points.

Nebraska Kearney is back in action at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow night against Colorado Mines.
