Kearney, Neb. – University of Nebraska Kearney Women's basketball got a combined 34 points from senior forward
Megan Becker (Beaver City) and junior forward Vanessa Leeper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to earn
73-52, win over Colorado Mines Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.
The Lopers improve to 11-8 and 10-5 in conference play, while the Orediggers fall to 7-13 and 3-12 in conference play. After tonight's win plus getting 75-67 win on December 17th in Golden, to sweep the season series and leads the all-time series 31-9.The Orediggers are playing without four starters due to injury who would combine for 54 points.
Mines would have their only lead of the game at 6-3 with 16:20 left in the half. Kearney would go on 20-1 scoring run that would give Kearney 23-7 lead with 7:33 left in the half. Leading scorer during the scoring run was Becker with eight points. Mines would cut the lead to single digits at the half and tail 25-32.
UNK would push the led back to double digits early on in the second twenty minutes of action. CSM would cut UNK lead down to 11 points twice during a minute span on a layup by Tory Langas and on another layup by Katie Clements.
On the night the Lopers would tie a season high with nine made three pointers, with juniors
Debi Johnson (Elsie),
Lea Ann Jameson (Minden) and Leeper all making two three pointers. The Lopers would out shoot and rebounds the Diggers, plus having more points off turnovers, second chance, fast break, and bench points.
Colorado Mines was led by Stephanie Fogle with 14 points and six assist, Langas contributed 13 points and six rebounds, Katie Carty would be the last scorer with 12 points to go along with a block and steal.
Nebraska Kearney was led in scoring by Leeper with 18 points and three assist, Becker would add 16 points by going 9-9 from the line and having three assists and blocks, finally Johnson chipped in with 10 points on 3-6 shooting to go along four rebounds.
Nebraska Kearney goes on the road next weekend to take on Mesa State & Western State.
