RMAC Preseason Favorites Use Big 2nd Half to Edge Men's Basketball

Max Froehlich
Kearney, Neb. – The Fort Lewis College men's basketball made 11 three pointers and had a plus 13 rebounding margin in the second half to rally past Nebraska-Kearney, 81-76, Monday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The preseason favorites in the RMAC, the Skyhawks improve to 9-2 (5-2 RMAC) and beat the Lopers (5-7, 3-5 RMAC) for a fourth straight time. UNK has now lost five in a row and six of its last seven games.

After letting an 18-point lead slip away Sunday against Adams State, the Lopers came out angry tonight, getting six threes from sophomore guard Akeem Morissaint (Delray Beach, Fla.) and out rebounding Fort Lewis 27-20 to lead 38-29 at the break.

Of those 27 rebounds, 10 came on the offensive end and led to 18 points.

The 'Hawks could've been down by double digits as they missed 12 of its first 13 shots but managed to make 10 of 11 free throws in the first half while not allowing UNK to take a single one.

The tables then turned after the break as Fort Lewis was the more aggressive team, out rebounding the Lopers 20-7, including an 11-2 mark on the offensive glass. On the perimeter, the 'Hawks made 8 of 12 three points shots, led by guard David Kanyinda (team-high 22 points; 6 of 9 threes).

A three from Kanyinda gave Fort Lewis its first lead of the game, 57-56, with 9:10 to play. After two UNK free throws, preseason RMAC Player of the Year DeAndre Landsdowne not only hit a triple but was also fouled on the play as well.

Soon after Landsdowne's four point play, Kanyinda followed with another three to make it 64-60 Fort Lewis. The Lopers never allowed the lead to get bigger then six points the rest of the way and had a chance to possibly tie the game late.

However, Kanyinda hit a jumper with the shot clocking winding down, and with five seconds on the game clock, to finish the scoring.

After making only 25.8 percent (8 of 31) of its shots in the first half, Fort Lewis shot 56 percent (16 of 29) in the second half. That included an 11 of 24 mark from behind the arc. Finally, FLC went 22 of 28 at the line and had a plus six rebounding margin, 40-34.

Besides Kanyinda, Landsdowne had 13 of his 15 points in the second half and David Steffensen scored all 13 of his points after the break. Five different 'Hawks pulled down at least four rebounds and guard Dorian Williams had a game-high seven assists.

For UNK, Morissaint finished with a season-high 20 points on 7 of 11 (6 of 10 threes) shooting. All six of his triples came in the first half; last year, Morissaint tied the school-record of nine threes in a win at Metro State.

Pierce junior Max Froehlich had 11 of his 16 points in the second half while also supplying six rebounds, three steals and two assists. In the lane, freshman post Mike Dentlinger (Millard North) had 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting.

UNK is at Chadron State this Saturday before heading to New Mexico the following weekend.
