Volleyball Wins Three Close Sets at Regis

Ellie Pesavento
Kearney, Neb. - The 25th-ranked Regis Rangers had more kills and a higher attack percentage but it was the 6th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team that won the match (-23, -23, -22) Friday night in Denver.

UNK (25-, 14-1 RMAC) has now beaten Regis (19-7, 10-5 RMAC) 29 straight times, dating back to early in the 1999 season.

Leading the RMAC in most offensive categories, the Lopers hit just .150 in the match and recorded 34 total kills. Regis, mean while, had 48 kills and hit .206.

However, the Rangers also had 12 service errors and were out blocked, 11-9, and out dug, 61-51.

No Loper had double digits in kills but four had between seven and nine. Sophomore middle Haley Lake (Lincoln SE) had a team-high nine and added four digs and two blocks on defense.

Sophomore middle Ellie Pesavento (Omaha Marian) was maybe the biggest factor for UNK as she recorded a match-high seven blocks while having seven kills and hitting .429.  AlsoL, junior setter Jenna Rouzee (GI Northwest) had 26 assists, 10 digs, and six blocks.

UNK led most of the way in the first set, including by scores of 19-14 and 21-16. But, Regis got within 23-22 after a block by Lyz Kann and Jessica Wojcik.

Two Ranger service errors, sandwiched around a kill by Caitlin McDonnell, finished the scoring in the set.

Regis also fought back in the second set, erasing a 20-17 Loper to take a 23-22 lead. However, a service error and two bad sets allowed UNK to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Lopers had to rally to complete the sweep as they were down 20-19 and 21-20 in the final set. A kill and block by Pesavento, and an unforced Regis error, helped UNK score three straight and then, again, Regis had a service error and bad set to end the scoring.

Wojcik (11 kills & 10 digs) and Kann (10 kills, five blocks, .626 attack pct.) led the Ragers.

UNK is at Metro State Saturday afternoon.
