Regis Shuts Down Women's Basketball

Box Score Kearney, Neb. –  The Regis University women's basketball team had a plus 20 rebounding margin and had three score in double figures to defeat Nebraska-Kearney, 56-37, Sunday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

Regis (5-5, 3-1 RMAC) wins for the third time in Kearney while the Lopers (0-8, 0-4 RMAC) remain winless on the season.

Kearney's low offensive production came as the result of 3 of 26 (11.5%) first half shooting. That included a 1 of 19 effort to start the game. UNK finished at 24% (13 of 54) and was also out rebounded 49-29.

Despite all this, the Lopers trailed by just a 41-31 score after senior Vanessa Leeper Jones (Colo. Springs, Colo.) capped an 11-0 run with a layup at the 6:15 mark.

However, UNK didn't score for the next three minutes. During that time, Regis scored four and didn't let its lead get smaller than 12 the rest of the way.

Making just 34% (17 of 50) of its shots and having 24 turnovers, Regis went 16 of 21 at the line and saw reserve guard Brandi Collins supply 12 points, six rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Also, starter Tae'lor Purdy (18 points & 11 rebounds) had a double double and starting post Kari Ameling had 10 points in 24 minutes.

After a career-high 17 points in a loss to 3rd-ranked Metro State Friday night, sophomore forward Shelby Zimmerman (Tri-County H.S.) had a team-high 11 points. All eleven came in the second half as she made 4 of 8 shots.

Also, senior guard Debi Johnson (Elsie) had five rebounds, five steals, four assists and four points.

The Lopers host Fort Hays State Tuesday night and then entertain Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian next weekend.
