Late Rally Propels Men's Basketball Past CCU

Chris Deans
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team finished on a 13-5 run to slip past Colorado Christian, 79-71, Sunday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK improves to 6-3 (4-2 RMAC) while the Cougars drop to 1-8 (0-5 RMAC). Christian, who led for the game's first 17 minutes, had won five of the last seven matchups between the two.

The fifth and final tie of the day came with 4:46 to go when CCU reserve post Michael Stamer made one of two free throws to knot things at 66. Senior reserve forward Chris Deans (Hemingford) started the Loper run with a three from the corner about 15 seconds later.

CCU again went one of two at the line and then sophomore post Mike Dentlinger (Millard North) made two free throws to make it 71-67 UNK at the 3:30 mark.  Kearney finished 16 of 19 (84%) at the line with CCU making only 11 of 19 shots (58%).

After a CCU turnover, junior wing Jon Henderson (Salt Lake City, Utah) made a jumper and followed with a three point play to give UNK its biggest lead to that point, 76-69, with just under two to go.

Christian, who is now 0-6 vs. Division II competition this year, led much of the way thanks to shooting well over 50% from the field. They ended 26 of 52 from the floor, including a solid 8 of 19 from beyond the arc.

Despite the Cougs hot shooting, UNK hung around, never letting the deficit get more than eight points. Kearney took its first lead of the game, 33-32, after junior reserve post Drew Sankey (Lincoln East) hit a baseline jumper with 3:05 left in the first half.

The Lopers led 40-39 at the break but trailed 51-45 about five minutes into the second half.

Senior guard Quinston Reggins (Houston, Texas), after a career-high 20 points Saturday vs. No. 6 Colorado School of Mines, went for 23 points thanks to 9 of 14 shooting. Making three of four three pointers, he also had five assists, four boards and two steals in 28 minutes.

Henderson tallied five of his 15 points in the final four minutes with Dentlinger making four of five shots to finish with 10 points. Off the bench, sophomore guard Tim Billingsley (Parker, Colo.) had a season-high 13 points with Deans and Sankey combining for 10 points and five rebounds.

The younger brother of former RMAC Player of the Year Brian Stamer, Michael Stamer came off the pine to pace Christian with 18 points and six rebounds. He reached his point total by making 8 of 11 shots in 29 minutes of work.

UNK is off until at road game at Adams State on December 30th.
