UNK Falls in Overtime to # 2 Roadrunners

Mike Dentlinger
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore guard Brandon Jefferson scored a game-high 29 points, and grabbed 10 rebounds, to lead the second-ranked Metro State men's basketball team to a 73-68 overtime win over Nebraska-Kearney Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Roadrunners (8-0, 3-0 RMAC) remain unbeaten on the season and take a one game lead in the all-time series, 28-27, with the Lopers (3-3, 1-2 RMAC).

In a contest where neither team held more than an eight point lead all night, Jefferson, a 5-9 lightening quick Texan, recorded a steal and a layup to start the extra session.  After the Lopers hit two free throws to tie things up at 61, another quick guard, 6-1 junior Demetrius Miller, hit a runner in the lane to put the 'Runners up for good.

Jefferson, who scored 21 points after the break, tallied Metro's next four points, the last three coming on a triple that made it 67-63 at the 2:25 mark.  UNK didn't get any closer as it went 2 for 7 from the field in overtime.

With things all tied up at 59, both teams had a chance to win it in regulation but the Lopers were called for travelling with 40 seconds to go and RMAC Preseason Player of the Year Reggie Evans missed a long jumper 33 seconds later.

It was a tough night for Evans, who went 3 of 19 from the floor and 3 of 8 at the line. Jefferson, making 8 of 14 shots and 9 of 11 freebies, led the offense instead with Miller adding 15 points and four rebounds.

A very tough and physical game, Metro made just 28% (9 of 32) of its second half field goals but led most of the night thanks to 17 offensive rebounds, leading to 19 points, and tallying 22 points off 23 UNK turnovers.

The 'Runners also took 20 more shots, 68 to 48, and turned it over only 11 times. Besides Jefferson and Miller, Metro got a double double from junior post Jonathan Morse (11 rebounds & 10 points).

UNK was led by sophomore forward Mike Dentlinger (Millard North), who had a season-high 25 points thanks to 10 of 17 shooting. He scored the team's first 11 points and also contributed 12 rebounds in 43 minutes of work.

Next, senior guard Quniston Reggins (Houston, Texas) had 18 points in 44 minutes and junior wing Jon Henderson (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored all 12 of his points after halftime.

Regis visits Sunday afternoon.
