Metro State (7-0, 2-0 RMAC), now the second-ranked team in Division II, has yet to leave Denver this year. With key regional wins over Winona State and Bemidji State under its belt, the Roadrunners look to break a 27-all tie in the series with the Lopers.
Since UNK joined the RMAC in the mid-1990's, and Metro became a national power soon after, this has been one of the top games on the Loper athletic schedule every season.
Kearney has won two of the last three meetings, including a 77-75 decision on the 'Runners home court in February of 2010 that featured a school-record 17 made threes.
This Metro team is paced by 6-8, 245 lbs. junior post Jonathan Morse (14.1 points & 9.0 rebounds per game) and RMAC Preseason Player of the Year Reggie Evans (18.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists pg), a 6-4 senior who missed the first three contests of the year.
Metro has a solid +8.9 rebounding margin and leads the RMAC in scoring defense, giving up just 56 points per game.
On Sunday, Regis (3-3, 0-2 RMAC) comes to town under the direction of head coach Lonnie Porter. He has won over 500 games in 35 years as the leader of the Ranger program.
All five Regis starters average in double figures with the bench providing just 16% of the team's scoring.
Thanks to a team-best 11 made threes, 6-3 junior guard Breen Weeks leads the offense (15.7) with 6-5 junior post Demitrius Owens (10.5 points & 9.8 rebounds) almost at a double double for the season.
Regis ranks third in the RMAC in turnover margin (+3.00) but is second to the last in threes made per game (3.8). UNK leads the all-time series, 30-7.
The Lopers, who are the third best free throw shooting team in the RMAC (73.6%), hope to get its offense back on track this weekend. Averaging 64 points a night, UNK went 5 of 30 from beyond the arc last weekend and has tallied over 70 points just once this year.
Defensively, UNK is sixth in the RMAC (67.6 ppg) in scoring defense thanks to nearly nine steals per game.
Next weekend, 7th-ranked Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian come to town on Saturday and Sunday. The games are pushed back to those days due to UNK winter graduation on Friday.
