Softball Goes Deep, Sweeps Eagles

Kirstie Hiatt
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney softball team hit eight home runs to sweep a double header from Chadron State, 6-4 and 15-12, Sunday afternoon in Chadron.

The series was pushed back a day due to inclement weather. The two teams will play another doubleheader on Monday starting at 1:00 p.m. Central.

UNK (2-4, 2-0 RMAC) won the first game as freshman outfielder Whitney Frederick hit a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to give the Lopers a 6-3 lead. From the leadoff spot, Frederick (Blair) went 3 for 3 with two RBI's and two runs.

Two innings earlier, senior third baseman Cassie Keck (Blair) hit a two-run shot to cut into a 3-0 deficit.

In the night cap, the Lopers went deep six times, none bigger than Keck's two out, thee-run shot in the top of the seventh to break a 12 all tie. Keck (3 for 5, four RBI's, three runs) hit a solo homer in the fourth and now has five on the year and 35 in her career. Darcie Berry ('00) holds the UNK career record for homers at 48.

On the mound, McCook junior Kirstie Hiatt threw a complete game eight hitter to win game one. She fanned eight and walked just one to earn her first win of 2011. Hiatt also earned the win in the second game as she allowed two earned runs over four full innings.

Besides Keck's heroics in game two, senior designated player Jessie Thomas (Yutan) went 4 for 4 with three RBI's and three runs, Frederick went 3 for 4 with three RBI's and three runs and Grand Island freshman outfielder Emily Mierau went 2 for 4 with two runs. Each of these Lopers hit a homer, as did junior pitcher/first baseman Dani Mowinkel (Scribner).

UNK trailed 7-2 after the first inning of the second game but rallied behind several big innings. In the seventh, the first two Lopers were put out but Mierau singled and Thomas doubled to set up Keck's game winner.

The Eagles (1-6, 0-2 RMAC) finished the day with 23 hits, including four homers.
