Softball Shut Down by Chadron Pitching

Allie Frost
Kearney, Neb. - Chadron State senior pitcher Christina Lewis tossed a five inning no hitter to help the Eagles sweep Nebraska-Kearney, 4-3 and 8-0, Monday afternoon in Chadron.

This four-game series was pushed back a full day due to inclement weather. UNK is now 2-6 (2-2 RMAC) while Chadron improves to 3-6 (2-2 RMAC).

On Sunday, the Lopers pounded out 25 hits, including eight homers, in sweeping the Eagles. That included recording 11 hits and seven runs off Lewis in six innings.

A native of British Columbia, Lewis bounced back today to earn her first win of the year by only allowing a walk over five innings. Of the 15 outs, three came via strikeout, six were ground outs and six were fly outs.

Lewis got all the support she needed in the bottom of the first as the Eagles scored twice on three hits and a Loper error. Overall, Chadron had 11 hits in the win with the top three in the batting order combining to go 6 for 9 with five RBI's and five runs scored.

In the early game, sophomore Kate Pinder improved to 2-3 by throwing a six-hit complete game. The Nevada native allowed two earned while fanning five and walking two.

Ahead 3-2, Kearney native Katie Bolin (2 for 2, two runs) hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to provide the winning margin. UNK scored an unearned run in its half of the sixth but never got the potential tying run in scoring position after that.

Grand Island freshman outfielder Emily Mierau went 2 for 4 with junior outfielder Allie Frost (D.C. West) hitting her first career homer in the fourth.

UNK plays at Colorado State-Pueblo this weekend.
