No. 6 Fort Lewis Ends Women’s Basketball Season

Kearney, Neb. – Nationally ranked Fort Lewis College used 31-15 second half scoring run to defeat University of Nebraska Kearney, 85-59, and extend their home winning streak to 46 games on Tuesday night in Durango, Colo.

Nebraska Kearney ends the season 13-14, while Fort Lewis improves to 26-2 and will play Friday night in Pueblo, Colo., against the winner of the Colorado State University-Pueblo/Colorado Christian winner at 5:30 p.m. (MST)

Fort Lewis has won the last four meetings and five of the last six; however Kearney leads the all-time series 20-6. Kearney is now 29-11 all-time in the RMAC tourney but 0-3 in 1st round road games.

FLC started the game by going on 14-4 scoring run that covered the first five minutes of the game, Abby Jackson would lead the way with nine points by hitting three 3-points.

The Skyhawks would have a double digit lead for most of the first half, the Lopers cut the Skyhawks lead down to three points when junior guard Kim Rickels (Iowa City, IA) hit a three pointer with 5:15 left in the first half.

FLC extended there led to nine points (42-33) at halftime. FLC shot 45.2 percent (14-31) from the field, while UNK shot 35.3 percent (12-34) from the floor in the first half.

Fort Lewis pushed there led back to double digits early on in the second twenty minutes of action. Nebraska Kearney would make one final comeback to get the lead down to three points by freshman Sarah Hix with a three pointer with 16:34 left in the game, that would be all the closer Nebraska Kearney would get rest of the game.

The Skyhawks had three players in double figures, lead by Jackson with 19 points on 5-8 shooting, Dana Schreibvogal finished with 16 points and six rebounds, finally Ashley Kuchar was the final play in double figures with 14 points and three assist.

The Lopers were led in scoring by junior Debi Johnson (Elsie) with a game and team high 19 points on 6-7 three point shooting and dished out three assist, fellow junior Vanessa Leeper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored 14 points and pulled down nine boards.

Nebraska Kearney will lose one senior in Megan Becker (Beaver City), who had her season end with an injury in the Western State game on February 5th.
