Kearney, Neb. - Sophomore cleanup hitter Josh Scheffert had three hits and two RBI's to help the Nebraska baseball team beat Nebraska-Kearney,
13-1, Wednesday afternoon at Haymarket Park in Lincoln.
The 'Huskers improve to 6-3 with the Lopers falling to 4-3.
UNK was poised to grab the early lead as senior 1b
Andrew Haake (Beatrice) led off the second with a single to right and senior 3b
Luke Valerius (Golden, Colo.) followed with a double to left. After a strikeout and a walk, UNL starting pitcher Matt Freeman (2-0) got out of the bases loaded jam thanks to 5-4-3 double play.
The Lopers wouldn't get another hit until junior
Mike Nowak (Omaha Roncalli) led off the seventh with a single to left. Nowak eventually scored thanks to a two-out single off the bat of senior CF

Nebraska, which finished with 14 hits and took advantage of seven walks, scored its first run in the third and then crossed home plate three times in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Besides Scheffert, sophomore shortstop Chad Christensen went 3 for 4 with two RBI's, junior third baseman Cody Asche went 2 for 4 with three runs and an RBI and sophomore DH Kash Kalkowski went 2 for 3 with two RBI's.
After Freeman went three innings, UNL used four other pitchers. The 'Husker arms fanned nine but also walked eight.

Yancy Birch (Grand Junction, Colo.) and true freshman
Ethan Poulsen (Longmont, Colo.).
UNK is scheduled to host Colorado Christian this weekend but those games may be moved to CCU or another city in Colorado.
