Senior Pitcher Helps Wayne Sweep Softball

Cassie Keck
Kearney, Neb. – Senior Katie Goetzinger picked up two wins on the mound and the Wayne State softball team had 26 hits at the plate to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 13-1 and 10-2, Tuesday afternoon in Wayne.

Both games lasted five innings; the first game was halted in the third for a 1:15 rain delay. UNK is now 7-15 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 10-7.

Goetzinger (7-3) struck out 10 and walked none in going the distance in game one. Allowing five hits, the only run she gave up was a solo homer to senior Jessie Thomas (Yutan) in the second.

Wayne struck for five in the first, two more in the second and three in the third and fourth innings. First baseman Jennifer Radley (2 for 3, three runs, three RBI's) and second baseman Blaire Kuhl (2 for 4, three RBI's) each hit homers in the win.

In game two, UNK tied the game at two in the top of the second on the strength of three hits, a walk and Wildcat error. Both runs scored after two were out with junior first baseman Dani Mowinkel (Scribner) having an RBI double in the inning.

Wayne quickly got the lead back by scoring two in its half of the second and then tallied three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Radley (3 for 3, three RBI's) and Heather Engelkamp (3 for 3, three runs, two RBI's) were the offensive stars for the 'Cats.

Goetzinger pitched the final three innings, striking out four and walking one while giving up just two hits. Last year, the Iowa native went 32-10 with a 1.11 ERA and 358 K's in 264.1 innings.

For UNK, senior SS Cassie Keck (Blair) went 2 for 3 and also had four assists in the field. The Lopers host Colo.-Colo. Springs this weekend.
