Softball Earns Another Weekend Split

Kearney, Neb. – University of Nebraska Kearney softball team earned another weekend split against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at Jaycee Sports Complex in McCook, due to unplayable field conditions at Dryden Park.

On Friday afternoon in game one the Lopers would score the first run of the game when senior DP Jessie Thomas (Yutan) hit a single off the glove of the third basemen, which scored fellow senior Cassie Keck (Blair) from second base.

UCCS (10-19, 7-13), would score six runs in their next two at bats to lead 6-1, which included a five run third inning. UNK (10-19, 9-9 RMAC), scored two runs in their half of the third inning and single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to trail after six innings of play.

Starting pitcher Kirstie Hiatt (McCook) pitched the first of two complete games in the loss, while striking out four batters and walking one.

Game two of the tripleheader the Mountain Lions got a great pitching performance out of Jessica Belsterling, who got the complete game victory and striking out 12 Loper batters in the 9-4 win.

Nebraska Kearney scored their first run in the second inning when Ali Seberger (Lexington) singled scoring first basemen Dani Mowinkel (Hooper) from second base. After a five run seventh inning, Nebraska Kearney got three runs in the bottom of the seven to cut the Colo.-Colorado Springs lead to five runs.

In the final game of the tripleheader the Lopers got a 4-3 victory, Hiatt would come back to pitch her 12 complete game of the year and fanning four Mountain Lions in the process.

UNK scored the first run of the game again, this time when Keck singled to score leadoff hitter Emily Mierau (Grand Island) from third after a sac bunt by Austin Wilson (McCook) to advance Mierau to third.

The Mountain Lions would respond by scoring one run in the second and two more runs in the following inning to lead 3-1.

Kearney would get the game winning hit when Tahnea Leeling dropped a fly ball with the bases loaded that was hit to right field by Keck scoring all three Kearney runners.

On Saturday afternoon the Loper bats would explode for seven runs over the first two innings in 7-1 victory.

Earning her first win of the season was Becky Dunn (Papillion), who allowed eight hits and fanning two batters.

All seven Loper runs were scored on home runs by Mowinkel hit three run homer in the first inning, her fifth of the season, Seberger started off the second inning with a solo homer her seventh of the year, later in the second inning Keck hit a two run homer, her 13 on the season

Nebraska-Kearney is on the road next weekend at Colorado Mines.
