Baseball Sweeps Series from Christian

Jordan Mitchelhill
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team swept a four-game RMAC series from Colorado Christian by outscoring the Cougars 32-8 this weekend in Lakewood, Colo.

Originally set for Kearney, the series was moved to Colorado due to weather. The Cougars (3-8) will now visit the Lopers (8-3) on Easter Weekend.

On Saturday, UNK won by scores of 10-2 and 2-1 and then rolled past CCU on Sunday, 9-5 and 11-0. The Lopers held CCU to a .182 batting average over the four games while hitting at a .275 clip. While neither team hit a homer, Kearney managed 10 doubles among its 36 hits.

Senior Roy Metter (Phoenix, Ariz.) secured Saturday's sweep when he threw a two-hit complete game (seven innings) in the nightcap. Allowing no earned runs, he fanned four and walked four while blanking Christian over the final six innings.

Ian Henry was almost equal to the task as he threw a five-hit complete game that featured five strikeouts.

UNK managed to tie things in the fifth on a two-out infield single from senior 1b Andrew Haake (Beatrice) and then senior 2b Jordan Mitchelhill (Melbourne, Australia) scored the winning run in the top of the seventh.

After hitting a one out double to left, Mitchelhill (2 for 3, two runs) moved to third on a passed ball and came home on a sac fly hit by senior OF Patrick Oliver (Broomfield, Colo.).

The series opener was scoreless until UNK scored a run in the fourth. The Lopers then erupted for three in the fifth, three in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

Mitchelhill (2 for 4, two RBI's) had another big game with Haake and senior OF Jason Trulin (Blair) also having two hits. Senior Todd Stachura (Scotia) earned the win by allowing two earned in seven full innings while senior Jake Kresse (Bennington H.S.) worked two innings of scoreless relief.

In the series finale, UNK scored 11 runs thanks to 12 hits, seven walks and two CCU errors. Eight of the runs came in the second as the Lopers batted around with Haake (2 for 3) having a single and double in the inning.

Also, sophomore catcher Chandler Klute (Kearney) went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI's and Mitchelhill was 2 for 4 with two RBI's.

True freshman Ethan Poulsen (Longmont, Colo.) earned his first win as a Loper by throwing five scoreless innings. Junior Yancy Birch (Grand Junction, Colo.) and sophomore Jacob Hiatt (Lincoln North Star) each worked an inning as the Cougars mustered just four hits in getting shutout.

UNK had to work hard for a win in the first game Sunday as Christian scored four runs in the bottom of the first. The Lopers, who committed five errors in the game, tallied three in the fifth to cut the deficit to one and then moved ahead for good with four in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Senior Andre O'Connor (Prescott Valley, Ariz.) worked 5.2 innings as the starter with junior lefty Mike Loseke (Arvada, Colo.) picking up the win by allowing one run in 3.1 innings of relief. Oliver and senior SS Brandon Buchanan (Loveland, Colo.) each had three hits to pace the offense.

UNK is at New Mexico Highlands next week.
