Baseball Wins Three against ‘Runners

Kearney, Neb. –University of Nebraska-Kearney baseball team used mid-April snowstorm that hit western Nebraska to its advantage in winning three of four games at Metro State College, this weekend in Denver.

Friday game was cancelled due to the snow storm that closed parts of the interstate in Nebraska and Colorado, changing the weekend series to doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lopers (23-11, 19-7 RMAC) scored the first runs of game one, when senior second baseman Jordan Mitchelhill (Melbourne, Australia) led off the game with a home run, followed by single from another senior Jason Trulin (Blair) scoring on the play was fellow senior Patrick Oliver (Broomfield, Colo.).

Metro State(21-11, 17-10 RMAC) answered Nebraska-Kearney two runs in the top of the inning with two in there half inning when David Fox and Jordan Stouffer hit singles to the outfield.

UNK would regain the lead in the next half inning on back to back hits from Oliver and senior first basemen Andrew Haake (Beatrice), Oliver's single scored Daren Grace (Blair), who led off the inning with a walk, and Haake's double scored Oliver, to lead 4-2.

MSCD grabbed 8-4 lead after five innings, scoring one in the fourth and five in the fifth inning.

Nebraska-Kearney scored seven runs over the final three innings to steal a game one victory, 9-8, with two runs in the top of the ninth inning on a hit by pitch and walk.

Game two did not have the last inning dramatics as game one did. The Lopers would use a four run first and sixth inning to cruse to 13-5, day one sweep of the 'Runners.

Roy Metter (Phoenix, AZ) struck out four batters in five innings pitched limiting Metro State to one run.

Metro State got two seven run innings in the second and sixth innings and limit the Loper bats to seven hits in 19-5 win Sunday afternoon in game one.

Corey Collins pitched seven innings, striking out six batters and walking two to earn his fourth win of the season.

UNK was led by Haake in game three by going 3-5 with a pair of RBI's.

In the final game of the series, Nebraska Kearney got great pitching performance from Mike Nowak (Omaha) by going six strong innings of two hit baseball and striking out eight Roadrunners in 12-2 win.

Metro scored it only runs of the game in the first two innings, however Kearney bats would come alive again by scoring at least one run in four of the seven innings, including six run sixth inning.

Nebraska-Kearney hosts Colorado Christian in doubleheaders next weekend.
