Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney softball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Regis,
5-3, in the first game of a double header Sunday afternoon in Denver.
Playing its third extra inning game of the year, this was the only win for the Lopers (12-25, 12-17 RMAC) on the weekend. Behind junior Nikki Habberkorn and senior Bianca Holley, the Rangers (24-14, 18-12 RMAC) won
1-0 and
5-0 on Saturday and
4-0 in the series finale.
After not crossing home plate on Saturday, UNK scored three runs in the top of the first to start Sunday's action. Four hits in the inning included a two-run double from junior first baseman
Dani Mowinkel (Scribner).
Regis hit a solo homer in its half of the first and then tied things up in the fifth on the strength of a two-run single by Holley.
In the UNK eighth, junior OF
Austin Wilson (2 for 4) led off with a single, senior catcher
Cassie Keck (2 for 4) followed with an infield single and junior OF
Allie Frost (D.C. West) was plunked by Holley.
A sac fly, caught in foul territory, from freshman 3b
Sarah Rome (Ft. Calhoun) brought home Wilson and Keck (Blair) later scored on a Regis error.
McCook junior
Kirstie Hiatt (10-15) threw a complete game four-hitter to earn the win. In the effort, she moved over 200 career K's (now 201).
Hiatt had an even better effort Saturday, tossing a complete game two-hitter in the 1-0 setback. The winning run scored in the bottom of the first as the result of a Loper error.
For the series, UNK hit .183 as a team with Haberkorn going 2-0 and not allowing an earned run in 14.0 innings. Fanning nine and walking one, she gave up only six hits.
Holley was also tough on the Loper bats, allowing four earned runs in 15.0 innings with an impressive 16 strikeouts.
UNK heads to New Mexico Highlands next weekend.
