Loper Nine Sneaks Past Christian

Felix Segovia
Kearney, Neb. – Senior catcher Felix Segovia hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team rally past Colorado Christian, 6-5, in the second game of a double header Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.

Despite just five hits, the Lopers won game one by a 6-4 score to be at 26-11 (22-7 RMAC) for the season. The Cougars, mean while, fall to 6-34 (2-28 RMAC), which includes a 2-14 record in games decided by two runs or less.

By way of comparison, the RMAC-leading Lopers are 10-4 in such contests.

With a stiff breeze blowing out to right all day long, senior lefty Tim Urban (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) was called on to pinch hit to start the UNK seventh in game two. He promptly delivered a shot down the right

field line that hit hard off the wall.

Urban initially stopped at first but took second after the throw hit the wind and landed in short center. Pinch runner G.J. Henry (Denver, Colo.) moved to third on a sac bunt, forcing Christian to bring in its infield.

That move didn't work as senior pinch hitter Brian Chritz (Arvada, Colo.) hit a ball that normally would've been caught in short right but instead landed for a game-tying single. Chritz moved to second on the throw home and then went to third on a fly out.

After senior OF Patrick Oliver (Broomfield, Colo.) drew a walk, senior 1b Andrew Haake (Beatrice) stepped to the plate. He was intentionally walked for the second time in as many at bats to load the bases. So far this weekend, Haake is 6 for 7 (.857) with seven walks, five runs and four RBI's.

Segovia (Las Vegas, Nev.) capped a 3 for 5 effort with a sharp single to left center that easily brought home Chritz.

Senior Jake Kresse (Bennington) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his second win of the series with junior lefty Mike Loseke (Arvada, Colo.) blanking CCU in the fifth and sixth innings.

CCU took the lead thanks to two wind-aided hits in the third, which brought home three runs. In the top of the first, the sun got into the eyes of a Loper outfielder, providing for a run scoring double.

In game one, UNK jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead as Haake (2 for 3, two runs) hit a two-run double and Segovia brought him home with a single to center.

However, Christian's Trey Stastny settled down, allowing only two more hits over the next six innings. Designated hitter JL Buchanan then gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead when he hit his team-leading seventh homer, a “Grand Slam”, in the third.

Despite just one hit, UNK took the lead back in its half of the third thanks to four walks, a hit batter and wild pitch. The lone hit was a two-out, two-run single to left from sophomore DH Chandler Klute (Kearney).

Arizona senior Roy Metter (6-3) earned the win by allowing four earned in 6.1 innings with Kresse striking out the final two batters of the game to earn his fourth save. CCU had runners at first and second before Kresse, who won Thursday as well, entered the game.

Finally, in the field, senior 2b Jordan Mitchelhill (Melbourne, Australia) had one putout and an unprecedented eight assists. He ended the Cougar fifth with a "web gem" that found him throwing out a runner while near second base.

The series concludes tomorrow with a nine inning game starting at 11:00 a.m.
