Stachura Shines as Baseball Beats Cowboys

Todd Stachura
Kearney, Neb. – Senior Todd Stachura threw a complete game three-hitter and the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team pounded out 15 of its own hits to roll past New Mexico Highlands, 8-1, Friday night at Memorial Field.

With the win, the Lopers improve to 28-12 (23-8 RMAC) while the Cowboys fall to 19-22 (13-19 RMAC).

Improving to 6-1 on the season, Stachura (Scotia) was in control all night long. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth and fanned a season-high eight.

Facing the RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year in Trent Evins (3-7), the Lopers got out to a 1-0 lead in the first after senior RF Patrick Oliver (2 for 5) roped a double to left center and senior 1b Andrew Haake (2 for 4) brought him home with a seeing-eye single to center.

Oliver (Broomfield, Colo.) then put UNK ahead by three when, with two outs in the second, he hit a two-run triple. The Lopers then busted open the game with a four-run sixth that featured five hits, including a two-run single by senior DH Felix Segovia (Las Vegas, Nev.).

All nine Loper starters had at least one hit with five having two or more. Evins, in six full innings, allowed seven earned on 12 hits and four walks.

The two teams play a double header tomorrow starting at one.
