Baseball Sweeps HU, Reaches 30 Wins

Felix Segovia hit four doubles on Saturday
Kearney, Neb. – Senior Roy Metter won his team-leading seventh game and the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team hit 11 doubles to sweep a double header from New Mexico Highlands, 8-1 and 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

By winning the first three games of the series the Lopers reach 30 wins (30-12, 25-8 RMAC) for the fourth time in five years while the Cowboys drop to 19-24 (13-21 RMAC).

In game one, Metter (Phoenix, Ariz.) struck out five, walked one and didn't allow an earned run in seven innings. Blanking Highlands for the last six innings, he is now 7-3 on the spring.

At the plate, seven of UNK's 12 hits went for two bases. Senior catcher Felix Segovia (Las Vegas, Nev.) and senior LF Brian Chritz (Arvada, Colo.) both had two doubles with eight Lopers having at least one hit.

Kearney scored two in the first, three more in the second and one in the third to take a commanding 6-1 lead. UNK had just four RBI's in the win as Highlands committed three errors.

Omaha junior Mike Nowak moved to 3-1 by working around six walks in four innings to win the nightcap. Shutting out the 'Pokes for the first four innings, he gave up just three hits and fanned two.

Senior Jake Kresse (Bennington) entered the contest after the first three Highlands batters reached in the fifth. He earned his sixth save the hard way as he got a come backer, with the bases loaded and one run already in, to end the game.

Highlands had three of its seven hits in its final at-bat and stranded 13 runners for the game.

Offensively, UNK had another 12 hits, four being doubles. Segovia (2 for 3) had two more two baggers with senior 1b Andrew Haake (2 for 2, two runs) hitting his 10th homer of the year in the fifth.

That also marked his 30th career dinger, making him just the seventh Loper to reach that total.

The series finishes up tomorrow with a single game starting at noon.
