Kearney, Neb. - Seven Nebraska-Omaha pitchers combined for a nine hit shutout to lead the Mavericks to a
5-0 win over Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday afternoon in Omaha.
This was the first time the Lopers and Mavs met on the baseball diamond in four years and the first time UNK has played at UNO in eight years. UNK, which is ranked 18th and 29th this week, falls to 19-7 while UNO, ranked 24th in one of Division II's three national polls, improves to 19-6.
On April 27th, the two teams will play at Werner Park, the new home of the Omaha Storm Chasers. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
UNO got all the runs it needed in the second when freshman second baseman Caleb Palensky (2 for 3) hit a two-run homer and junior third baseman Brady Hohl (2 for 4) later followed with an RBI double to left. The Mavs also tacked on a run in the third and one more in the eighth.
The Omaha pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts and just one walk with junior lefty Tom Schmidt earning the win in relief. No Maverick threw more than 2.2 innings.
For UNK, seniors
Patrick Oliver (Broomfield, Colo.) and
Felix Segovia (Las Vegas, Nev.) each went 2 for 4 with senior
Ricky Muir (Easton, Conn.) throwing three innings of scoreless relief.
The Lopers return to RMAC play this weekend when Mesa State comes to town for four games.
