Mustangs Sweep Doubleheader against Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Kale Gahn hit the game winning homerun to centerfield to secure Western New Mexico University sweep of Nebraska-Kearney, 10-7 & 5-4, on Friday Afternoon at Dryden Park.

On the second pitch on the game Brittney Batten would hit her fourth homer of the season to right field off the scoreboard giving Western New Mexico, (17-23 & 13-11 RMAC),  an early 1-0 led, then Ashley Eichenber would belt her team leading 12 homer two batters latter, and the last run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly by Ricki Gentry.

UNK, (9-22 & 9-14 RMAC), would get two of the three runs back in there half of the first inning when junior centerfielder Austin Wilson (McCook) hit her second home run of the year, senior DP Jessie Thomas (Yutan) doubled to left centerfield scoring fellow senior Cassie Keck (Blair) from first base.

Junior first basemen Dani Mowinkel (Hooper) belted a three run homer to left field giving the Lopers 5-3 led.

Western New Mexico would regain the lead when Sarah Byrne hit a three run homer to right field tying the game at six and then would tack on three unearned runs in the sixth inning to led 9-5.

The Lopers added single runs in sixth and seventh innings off of home runs by junior right fielder Allie Frost (Valley) and freshman left fielder Emily Mierau (Grand Island).

In game two, WNMU scored four runs in second inning with three of those runs coming off of Batten's homer to leftfield; the other run was scored on a single by Ashley Gonzales.

Nebraska-Kearney got back to back home runs from Frost and junior Ali Seberger (Lexington) in the fourth inning to trail 4-2. Keck would lead off the bottom of the seventh by hitting her team leading 14 home run to leftfield, two batters latter Mowinkel tied the game at 4 on a homer to leftfield as well.

Western New Mexico got the game-winning run with two out home run to center field off the bat of Gahn.

Sophomore pitcher Becky Dunn (Papillion) pitch her second complete game in defeat, striking out three batters.

Nebraska-Kearney is back in action tomorrow afternoon versus Adams State.
